Grant Writing...........Telling Your Story
There are three different types of grant funding: Government (State, Federal, and Your Local County, or Parish Government) Private- Foundation, and Corporate. For private and corporate grants, funders require you to describe the problems or issues you exist to combat, provide your organization's history, and demonstrate you have the capacity to manage the funding your are requesting. You are expected to clearly illustrate why you deserve the requested money more than the next organization fighting for those same grant dollars.
We assist organizations with grant writing, preparation, research, development, and even reviews before your proposal is submitted to ensure that it's submitted promptly and properly. One thing I can say that consultants in my field will consistently agree on. Small-minded, hard headed charities rarely if ever have the opportunity to grow because of their lack of investment in educational tools to build capacity. If staff can't attend trainings, invest in hard copy and electronic methods of education resources that can help your organization grow. Finally, understand you may not know it all. And that is okay. We all need help from time to time. Get help when you can. There are thousands of great consultants available to assist your organization with almost any problem you may have. Remember one thing though. You get what you pay for. So if you're attitude is cheap, you'll get mediocre service (if you're lucky). Experienced consultants spend thousands of hours putting out fires and fixing hiccups to move charities on to the next level of the nonprofit cycle. Allow them to assist you. Allow them to do their jobs. Pay them their worth. You pay the plumber, your attorney, and that old HVAC company when your A/C goes on the blink. Value and compensate nonprofit consultants and grant writers appropriately. Your stakeholders will thank you for it.
PLEASE NOTE there are NO grants given to individuals for requests such as starting a business or paying off your bills from the federal government, or for going to college. There are grants available through some states and the federal government, but they are very rare and usually for research, fellowships, and Small Business Innovation & Research (SBIR). We do not assist individuals with grant searches and writing for business grants unless there is a specific solicitation or notice for which the applicant is eligible to apply. Contact your state economic development organization or your state budget and control board to determine what is available in your state or region for your for-profit business needs and interests. For business start ups, you should contact the Small Business Administration or your local SCORE office.
